Avant-propos : Comme vous n'allez pas tarder a le decouvrir, ce post est redige en anglais. Famille et amis, ne vous affolez pas, vous ne manquez rien : il est destine aux gens rencontres sur la route des Indes...
So one day we meet, we talk, we eat, visit or bullshit, exchange email adresses, and most of the time... well, that's it.
Since I have this blog, and althought it is usually in french, I decided to write a post in english just for you guys, to let you know what I'm up to if ever you're interested in knowing (!), to allow those of you who are already back home to keep travelling through reading, and so that we can keep in touch if you like. I will also try to give some good adresses I found on my way, and that are not always in "The Book".
As english is not my mother tongue, I rely on you to excuse my spelling and my total absence of style and rythm of this post...
So, what have I been up to, hum ?
**Goa**
My firsts steps in India were in Goa. I stuck around almost 2 weeks, mostly in Panjim and Palolem. Thanks to Nesh, Hyacinth, Pierre, Nesh, Samson, Ed, Alifton and Olivia, those first days were a nice easy first contact with India for me.
If you ever go to Panjim, The Book says it all, Viva Panjim is a good place to eat (and drink beer), ans Venite Hotel is a good place to eat (and drink cocktails). Talking about cocktails, if, like me, you travel off-season, you'd better enjoy them in Goa, because it's not a specialty of India aywhere else !...
The question everyone asks himself arriving in Goa is "which beach to choose ?...?". Well, I liked Palolem a lot. If you ever go there in season time, ask for Alifton on the beach, he's a great guy and manages a piece of land under the coconut trees where you can rent shacks right on the beach, but not right on the main street (which I find better and quieter).
**Gokarna**
North of the state of Karnataka, on the coast, is the small city of Gokarna. I felt like it was just far from everything, a nice place to get away from the hassle of the cities and big touristic places. I first arrived at Om Beach. Let me tell you there is nothing there during the off season ! I eventually ended-up, thanks to Velna and Hemli, 2 great Finnish girls, on Kuddle beach. It's funny how some places feel like a little world on themselves. Kuddle beach is one of those places longtimers are really fond of, with cheap basic rooms in the hotel at one side of the beach (100 per night, sea front...), and a spring of drinkable water at the other side. 20 minutes walk to the city, where a restaurant called "Brema" -if my memories are right- will serve you f***ing good food !
Lots of Finnish people on Kuddle beach : 2 others guys also, both speaking quite good french, both with untypical interesting stories to tell... Especially Patrik, who seemed to have tons of readings to recommand. So here is one : J. Krishnamarti, The first and last freedom. I haven't read it yet, the title kind of sucks, but still I think it's interesting.
**Mysore**
Mysore has one thing : a palace. Well, it's a palace. And it seems that it's not really my thing.
I heard it's a great place for a special kind of Yoga.
So, some people like it a lot, I didn't.
**Tricchur**
I had a really nice time there as I was welcomed in an indian family. But I wouldn't say the city is worth the detour.
> Laya, as I told you, remember you're my guest anytime in France !
**Cochin**
More precisely, Fort Cochi : a fucking great place ! I loved it, spent a few nights there and even came back as I felt I needed more time there. It was also great, after a good 10 days being the only western tourist around, to meet some travellers.
The cooking class of Leelu is good, and she's a nice, perfect-english-speaking women, altought you can really feel the business in the air. Jewtown is a great place for "antiques" shopping. And if you happen to wake-up early, have a look on the jetty where all the fishermen's boats leave... I found it amazing.
- Good place to stay : The Vasco Homestay is nice but expensive and they don't do any off-season price. But the Spencer House does ! And you can have a room there for 300 rp/night, good value, great place.
- For a drink, the Seagull can be a good place if you have lots of mosquito cream on you. Ask the waiter for cocktails, he knows how to do the easy ones, althought they're not on the menu. I had a great time there with 3 americans guys. I also met a nice french couple there, Karine and David : they have a sailing boat and pretty much sail the world all year long. If you're interested in sailing cruise "of the record" I understood you can send them an email to check out were they are and see if it matches your plans.
Alicia > I think I'll remember your show of the black-american woman for a long long time. :)
**Varkala**
Nice place to hang around for a little while. Lots of people get stuck there, as the off-season feeling is really nice. You can get a great room with a sea-view for nothing (150 rp/night), the food is expensive as there's only one restaurant open now, but cocktails are great at the Funky cafe. I know, I'm all about cocktails, but come one, the beer sucks ! Anyway on the beach the lifeguards are a real pain in the ass, but if you can find a moment when there gone, the "swim" (moonson swim never is a real swim...) is really good.
Thanks to Hannah I met a crew of french-speaking people, which felt both weird and nice to me. I also got to know belgium guys, one "Flamand" (kind of deutsh speaking, I don't know to name them in english... oups) and one "Wallon" (french-speaking). Let me tell you the "Flamands" are obsessed with their hometown ! ;)
> Guys, if you're reading this, I've got lots of pictures I'll try to put online asap.
> Jen, I got your message. I should be in Mumbai in 2 weeks or so, and I might go for a few days in Gujarat afterwards. I'm still in for a few days together on our way north. Let me know what you're up to when you're done in the south.
> Greg and Egle : Let me know how your trekk was !
**Munnar**
How ! It feels so nice to have a little bit of cool air ! The place is lost in the mountains but it's really worth going. Surrounded by tea plantations, we (hannah, Junghyuck and me) got to walk by ourselves, without a guide, in the plantations. No noise. No rickshaw. No shop. No trash. God that felt good ! The day after we went on a trek with Tytti and climb some moutain 2400 meters high. And the day after Alejandro and Till arrived and, thanks to them, I've tasted almost every item on the menus of Munnar's restaurants !
- Good place to stay : Greenview Hill. It's next to JJ Cotage, and the staff if far nicer. They're also good at organizing trekks or explaining you how to walk around by yourself. It's cheaper. They have rooms with a view. And the water is hot for real.
- Good place to eat : Bambou restaurant. Till and Alex found the place and yep, it's good.
By the way, check out the website of the crazy charity rickshaw run Alex and Till did : www.rickshawrun.com/fahrvergnuegen
**Madurai**
I find it to be a much quieter city than Mysore for example. Maybe Tamils are different, I don't know yet since I've only been here 2 days. Madurai's temple is huge and very impressive. A guided visit helped me to understand a bit more abour hinduism although, to be honest, how can one know all the gods and goddesses since they each have dozens of different names depending on the state, the story in which they appear, and who knows, maybe even the season !... So I'll keep trying, but what a mess !
I'm still travelling with Tytti and the good news is : she sleeps ! We also met Glenda again here. She and Tytti are heading to Ponddicherry tommorrow, the classy way : car and driver ! I'll join them sunday night, just in time -I hope- to watch the Eurocup final...
- Good place for a swim and sunbath : Fortune blabla (can't remember, it's in The Book). That is only if you don't mind being lokked at by a good 20 guys standing on a balcony. But, to be honest, it felt more like looks than stares, and the balcony is far away enough to be forgotten. Just don't go alone or this will ruin your fun !
- Good place to sleep : The Golden Park. It's opposite the Chentoor, (a bit) cheaper, cleaner.
- Good place to eat : Kumar Mess, same street than the hotel.
** **
That's it for now. I think it's a bit boring but well, it won't stay boring if you add your comments ;)
And if any of you have good advices about Tamil Nadu, please tell me !
I'll end this with a text message I received today on my indian cell phone : "From : GOA POLICE : FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR LOVED ONES - SAY NO TO DRUGS."
India...
